Septic Tank Basics
A septic tank system performs a significant function that aids to preserve the safety of public health and the environment. Properly functioning residential septic systems increase the value of homes as well as maintaining a clean water system. All on-site wastewater systems use a type of septic tank system sometimes referred to cesspools, manure handling systems, or sewage holding tanks.
All the wastewater from household and industrial usage gets pumped into these systems and get stored underground. The stored wastewater then separates into two main categories, scum and solid sludge (manure). The scum flows through the system and exits the drainage field often not properly treated and containing harmful substances to the environment. The sludge remains and is slowly broken down with the naturally occurring microbes.
In most cases these natural microbes are not sufficient to break down the sludge and it is built up and begins to clog the system causing backed up pipes and fields creating a huge mess. Herein lies the problem, without proper digestion of slug in any system it can be very expensive to clean, pump out or excavate and instal new systems.
